Lack of dignity of labour hits work culture in Assam

The outflow of the workforce tempts others to grab economic opportunities in the state

GUWAHATI: The issue of youths from other states availing job opportunities in Assam often rakes up protests here. Lakhs of youth from Assam getting established with jobs in other states is also a reality.

A recent survey has revealed that around 9.8 lakh youths from Assam are working in the private sector in Kerala alone. Thus, it is amply clear that a large workforce of Assam is rendering services in other states.

The reasons behind this outflow of workers can be – either these state youths have not got employment opportunities in Assam, or they feel shy doing lower-rung jobs in their home state. Anyway, this trend has created a vacuum of labourers in Assam. And the youths of a particular community are grabbing this opportunity with both hands.

According to official records, Assam had 24.04 lakh registered unemployed till January 2022. The rise in the number of unemployed in the state is steep. In the six months from September 2021 to January 2022, as many as 2.53 lakh unemployed youths registered themselves in the state employment exchanges. When looking into educated unemployed in the state, most of them are X-XII passed. They comprise around 13 lakh, besides 3.5 lakh graduates. The state also has 8,136 graduate engineers, 345 veterinary doctors, 299 agri graduates and 16,913 technical diploma holders unemployed, among the around 24 lakh unemployed.

When youths working in other states came back to Assam in hordes during the Covid-19 outbreak, the State Government did register the names of around 4 lakh of them with an assurance to rehabilitate them in the state. However, the State government gave works through job cards to nearly 20,000 among the four lakh.

According to official sources, most of the youths who came back to Assam during the pandemic went back to the states of their employment after the pandemic relented. The reasons behind this are that the skill sets that such youths have acquired have little scope in Assam. A section of the returnees does not want to stay back in the state as they feel shy to work low-rung jobs in their home state. Most of them rush to Kerala because the wage is very high there – even an unskilled worker can earn around Rs 1,000 daily.

The vacuum of labourers thus created in the state has become a level-playing field for the youths of a particular community to prosper financially. If we can motivate the state's around 13 lakh X-XII passed registered unemployed with the dignity of labour, they can fill the vacuum of labourers to an extent in the state.

What is the importance of the dignity of labour?

As every person has the right to choose the profession of his choice. Hence Dignity of Labor is important for all occupations, whether involving intellect or physical labour, deserves equal respect and dignity. There must be no job considered superior or inferior. Every job that is dutifully done with honesty and sincerity deserves appreciation.

How can we promote the dignity of labour?

To create a positive culture, the leaders of your organization must not only promote this behaviour, they must also understand its importance. Employees who feel they are treated with respect and dignity are more engaged and productive than those who don't.

Disadvantages of the dignity of labour

A worker has to do the same small task again and again. Therefore, the job becomes boring and the worker loses interest in his work. Boredom and monotony create mental fatigue which ultimately spoils the quality of work.
