AXX IMBROGLIO
BY OUR STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI, Dec 30: For the first time in the history of the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX), its president Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora on Friday resigned from all his positions in the apex literary body of the State, before the expiry of his extended one year term.
It may be mentioned that the AXX's 74th session will be held from February 1 to 5 next at the historic Jerenga Pathar near Joysagar.
Although Bora officially linked the reason of his resigtion with the deteriorating work atmosphere in the Xabha, his decision actually stemmed from alleged high-handedness of its secretary general Paramanda Rajbongshi and the resulting breach of the literary body's constitution.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, Dr Bora said, "By giving respect to the people of the State, I have decided to resign from all my positions in the Axam Xahitya Xabha. I feel that there is no work atmosphere in the Xabha now."
On Thursday, an executive meeting of the Xabha was held in which Dr Bora had decided to resign. In that meeting, presidents and general secretaries of the 27 district branches of the Xabha were present.
The apex literary body is in troubled waters this time on the vexed issue of extension of the two-year term of the executive committee of the Xabha to a three-year term, apparently on the pretext of holding its centery celebrations. The current logjam prompted Dr Bora to call an emergent meeting of former AXX presidents on December 20 so as to guide the Xabha, but the meeting was cancelled due to non-attendance of the former presidents.
However, the logjam took a new twist with the iuguration committee of the AXX centery celebrations and various organizations of Sivasagar taking a decision in unison not to allow AXX secretary general Paramanda Rajbongshi to enter Jerenga Pathar where the AXX will hold its 74th session.
Since the extension of the term of the AXX executive committee by a year has no constitutiol sanction, 22 noted persolities including four former AXX presidents, noted writers, jourlists and educationists made an open appeal for the formation of the new central executive committee of the Xabha. The 22 persolities demanded that the new body of the AXX be constituted immediately and if the need arises, the centery celebrations of the Xabha be deferred by a year.
This open appeal prompted the AXX to call an emergent steering committee meeting on December 12. The AXX secretary general even told the media that the 22 persolities had hatched a conspiracy against the Xabha.
Four members of the six-member editorial board of the Compilation Committee of the History of Axam Xahitya Xabha also resigned. Three of them said the present dismal situation arising out of the controversy is related to Rajbongshi.
