Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport ranked 10th in list for domestic passengers

Guwahati: It is great news for Assam that the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport at Guwahati’s Borjhar has been ranked number 10 in terms of the number of passengers served in domestic airports in the country this year, up to the month of October. During the period of January to October 2024, as many as 50,07,414 passengers passed through the LGBI airport. This was revealed in the statistics presented by the Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu during the ongoing winter session of Lok Sabha.

The minister’s statement on the top 10 domestic airports in 2024 (until October) revealed that Delhi is ranked no 1 in terms of number of passengers, with a total of 4,60,58,788 passengers served; Mumbai is ranked number 2 with 3,21,11,146 passengers; Bengaluru is placed 3rd in the list with 2,87,46,030 passengers; Hyderabad is in 4th place with 1,88,13,052 passengers; Kolkata is in number 5 with 1,51,54,491 passengers; Chennai occupies the 6th rank with 1,31,32,837 passengers; Ahmedabad is ranked 7th with 85,76,305 passengers; Pune is in 8th place with 83,61,082 passengers; Dabolim is ranked 9th with 53,16,402 passengers; and Guwahati has been ranked 10th with 50,07,414 passengers served. It was, however, stated that the figures supplied are provisional in nature.

The Union Minister further revealed that 13,21,48,887 passengers were carried by scheduled Indian operators for scheduled domestic operations in the airports of the country this year up to October.

In tandem with the rise in the numbers of passengers passing through the LGBI airport, work on the extension of the airport is being carried out, and a new terminal is being built, along with construction of the alternate route from the airport to Dharapur. The new terminal is scheduled to be operational by next year.

At present, the LGBI operates flights to several international destinations like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore, apart from the domestic destinations.
