London: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a vibrant cultural welcome from the Indian diaspora upon his arrival in the United Kingdom, with a traditional Bihu dance performance by a group of London-based Assamese artists marking the occasion. The cultural reception, held on Wednesday, was organized to celebrate Modi’s visit and to showcase India’s rich and diverse heritage on an international stage. Among the highlights was the spirited Bihu performance, presented by Assamese dancers now settled in the UK.

“I am from Assam and have been living in the UK for the last 12 years. I can’t express how happy I was to see PM Modi. It was a proud moment to perform the Bihu dance,” said Madhusmita Borgohain, one of the lead dancers. Another dancer, Chinu Kishore, who has lived in the UK for over two decades, added, “It was truly an honour to perform and witness the Prime Minister in person.”

Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in London marks the first leg of his two-nation tour. During the visit, he is scheduled to hold talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and will also meet King Charles III. This is Modi’s fourth visit to the UK since assuming office, following trips in 2015, 2018, and to the COP26 climate summit in 2021. The current visit aims to strengthen India-UK relations, with a focus on key areas including trade, investment, technology, education, and cultural exchange. Talks are expected to accelerate negotiations on a proposed Free Trade Agreement, with both sides keen to deepen economic and strategic ties.

After concluding, PM Modi will proceed to the Maldives as part of his ongoing diplomatic outreach in the region.
