GUWAHATI: A low-pressure area over south Bangladesh and adjoining North Bay of Bengal and West Bengal has brought the much-needed rainfall to Assam. The State, particularly Guwahati city was reeling under intense heat for more than a week. "The low-pressure area is likely to move westwards across West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar during the next 48 hours. There were moderate to heavy rainfalls in different parts of the Assam," an official at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Borjhar said.

The RMC has predicted that thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Assam has so far received 16% below normal monsoon rainfall. Sources in the RMC here said the State has experienced 571.9 mm rainfall between June 1 and July 17 this year. The total quantum of rainfall during this period is 16% below the normal level. While 13 districts have received scanty rainfall, there is normal rainfall in 13 other districts.
