MAJULI-BONGALMARA BRIDGE: PWD issues work order

GUWAHATI: Good news for the people of Majuli and Lakhimpur districts! The State PWD has issued the work order for the much-needed Majuli-Bongalmara Road and Four-lane Bridge project to SP Singla Constructions Pvt Ltd, the lowest bidder.

According to PWD sources, the construction work of the project – improvement and upgradation of the road from Balichapori, Majuli to Bongalmara, Lakhimpur, including the construction of two major bridges over Subansiri and Luit – will start in October/November this year as the flood season is till to end in the state.

It takes time for mega projects to mobilize men and machinery at project sites. If any machinery is not available in the state, the construction company concerned will have to bring them from other states.

Against the estimated project cost of Rs 785.364 crore, the award cost is around Rs 697 crore. The project has two major four-lane river bridges. The road portion of the project is of two lanes.

It is one of the policy decisions of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government in the state for better road connectivity between Majuli and Lakhimpur. The completion schedule of the project is 36 months.

According to state PWD sources, the entire stretch from Balichapori in Majuli to Bongalmara in Lakhimpur is around 19 km. The length of the bridge over the River Subansiri will be 2 km, and the one over the River Luit will be 700 metres.
