GUWAHATI: The NESO (North East Students' Organization) said that the Centre should make the Northeast an economic hub under the Look East Policy instead of using it as the corridor for trade and commerce between the rest of India and the South East Asian countries.

Addressing the media today, NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said, "We will stage a three-hour protest on August 17 in all state capitals in the Northeast, in support of our demands. We reiterate all our demands like putting an end to infiltration of illegal foreigners in different parts of the Northeast, the solution to inter-state boundary disputes and sealing of the international borders, withdrawal of the AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Power Act) from the region, etc. We oppose the CAA. We appeal to the Centre not to implement the Act in the Northeast. AASU and others moved the Supreme Court of India against the CAA. No hearing on CAA took place after 2020. Our protest against the CAA will continue."

NESO adviser Samujjal Bhattacharjya said, "Illegal infiltration from Bangladesh is a threat to the identity of the indigenous people of the Northeast. Our demand is the detection, deletion and deportation of illegal Bangladeshis entering Assam and other northeastern states. Illegal infiltration reduced Tripris into a minority in their homeland. Special safeguard is a must for the Tripris. The people of Assam need constitutional safeguards mentioned in Clause VI of the Assam Accord. The high-level committee submitted its report, but the government has not implemented it. We want the introduction of an inner-line permit for all the north-eastern states. The Government must root out jihadis as the Northeast has turned into a transit route of fundamentalists. Save the Northeast today to save the country tomorrow."
