GUWAHATI: The Manipur government detected 29 suspected Bangladeshis equipped with Aadhaar cards generated in Assam and sent them back to Assam.

A few days back, 16 Bangladeshis were caught by the Assam police along the Bangladesh border. Nine of the 16 Bangladeshis were equipped with Indian Aadhaar cards.

At a time when indigenous people in Assam cannot get Aadhaar cards at ease, how come people from Bangladesh get Aadhaar cards at ease? This is a mystery that needs to be cracked.

The 29 Bangladeshis were working in a bakery in the West Imphal district, violating the IPL (Inner Line Permit) norms. The Manipur Government has even constituted a state-level committee to review the overall implementation of the IPL after this incident.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said, “After this incident came to light, we suspect that there might be illegal immigrants in Manipur from Bangladesh.”

People of suspected nationalities getting Aadhaar cards, voter cards, ration cards, etc., at ease is not a big deal in Assam. A racket has been working overtime to make such documents in order to facilitate people from Bangladesh to enter the state. After entering Assam, such immigrants move to other states of the country. For instance, the first person from Silchar to have received Indian citizenship under the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) recently actually had all the documents like Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, voter cards, etc., that an Indian citizen ought to have way back.

Since such people of suspected nationalities have been getting all such facilities as Indian citizens, the reason that may make them apply for Indian citizenship through the CAA does not arise. This is one of the reasons why only 12 people have applied for Indian citizenship under the CAA even after its implementation around nine months ago.

The reason behind the ruckus in the state by various organizations and political parties with the apprehension that lakhs of people from Bangladesh staying in Assam will get Indian citizenship after the implementation of the CAA does not sound convincing now.
