DIBRUGARH: A massive stir against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)-2019 led by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) along with 30 other indigenous organizations was organized at Chabua — the hometown of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal — on Thursday.

Participating in the huge rally organized by the Dibrugarh district unit of AASU in association with the Chabua regional unit of the students' body and the people of the town, AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, said, “Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, during his tenure as the president of AASU, had tried to convince the people as well as both the then Union and the State governments that the solution to the foreigners issue in the State is possible only by implementing the provisions laid down in the Assam Accord; but after assuming power as the Chief Minister, Sonowal is acting as a stooge of the Union government. He is now bent on solving the vexed problem of illegal foreigners through the recently introduced CAA ignoring the sentiment of the people of the State.”

Reiterating the AASU’s stand on rollback of the CAA, Gogoi further stated that “the people, meanwhile, have already cornered the State government and are gearing up to give a fitting reply — politically — in the days to come. The people have come out in large numbers to take part in the rallies against the CAA — which is not only unconstitutional but also against the interest of indigenous people of the State.”

He demanded that “the Government must roll back the controversial CAA in the greater interest of the Assamese people and to keep intact their languages, cultures and political rights”. The AASU leader cautioned that “otherwise the people from all walks of life would thwart the conspiracy hatched by the Union government in connivance with the State government”. The masses at the protest rally raised anti-CAA slogans and vouched to continue their stir till the Centre abrogates the Act.
