GUWAHATI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) sounded a red alert in Assam and Meghalaya with the prediction of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning, squalls, etc., on June 18 and 19, 2025. The MHA issued an orange alert for June 20 across the two states.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) made this known following a communication received from the MHA earlier in the day today.
ASDMA said, “The weather pattern suggests that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places in various districts of Assam in the coming 2-3 days, which may aggravate waterlogging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable pockets. The local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and emergency response systems are being kept on alert.”
In view of the above and also recent incidents of floods, landslides and water blockage due to very heavy rainfall that occurred a few days back, ASDMA requests all the people of the state to take all necessary precautions and remain vigilant. Daily commuters and long-distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides. Residents in vulnerable areas are further advised to keep an adequate stock of essential items such as medicines, candles, etc. The ASDMA has issued helpline numbers for people to reach it – 0361-1070, 0361-1079, 0361-112 and DDMA on 0361-1077.
In its special weather bulletin, IMD (India Meteorological Department) also warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places over Assam till June 20, 2025.
On the current meteorological conditions, RMC (Regional Meteorological Centre), Guwahati of IMD said, “The upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and neighbourhood extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.”
In the past 24 hours, Neamatighat in the Jorhat district received the state’s highest rainfall of 11 cm, followed by Jorhat with 7 cm.
