GUWAHATI: Young microbiologists at six medical colleges and hospitals in Assam are playing a crucial role in the State's fight against COVID-19.

Sources in the Health department said that these microbiologists have been conducting swab testing for the last three months without taking a single day leave and off from their duties. Their relentless efforts have resulted in the State's recent achievement of conducting one lakh COVID test.

"With the State targeting to complete two lakh tests by June 15, these microbiologists are now working on a war footing. It is not so easy to conduct so many swab tests at a time. Besides the workload, these microbiologists are also at the risk of contacting the virus accidentally. Even though these are taking all precautions including wearing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) kits, the risk is still very. But morale of the microbiologists is still very high," the source said.

The Health department has also been able to mobilize various resources and create more facilities to conduct 10,000 such tests daily for the fast detection of COVID-positive patients; and thereby draw strategies to prevent spread of the virus at the community level.
