GUWAHATI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has finally extended the term of the 64 Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) in the State for two years. The terms of these FTs expired on May 23, 2021.

As per an MHA order, the extension of the term of the FTs will come into effect from May 23, 2021.

Earlier, the State Home and Political Department had written a letter to the MHA seeking an extension of the terms of the 64 FTs.

Before 2015, Assam had only 36 Foreigners Tribunals. Following a directive of the Gauhati High Court and approval from the MHA, the State Government had set up 64 more FTs in 2015. The 64 FTs have a validity of two years. However, their two-year terms got extended in 2017, in 2019 and now in 2021.

Assam now has a total of 100 FTs and over one lakh cases pending in them. The purpose of these Tribunals is to identify foreigners and Indian nationals.
