SILCHAR: Continuing their ongoing aggressive expansion, a section of people from Mizoram have already taken into possession large tracts of land on the Karimganj front.

Assam Minister of Forest & Environment, Parimal Suklabaidya has simplified this serious issue by his simplistic statement that Mizoram has aggressed upon only 1.5 km of Assam land. But, the reports from the areas of Karimganj along the boundary with Mizoram are quite serious. A war-like situation prevails there. The ground reality is that around 3.5 km of areas deep inside the Medlicherra Reserve Forest under the Patharkandi Constituency of Karimganj have been already occupied by the by miscreants from the neighbouring State.

Another verified report says the highlands and hillocks along the LowaipowaKanmoon Highway connecting Mizoram are found to be under Mizo occupation. They have built bunkers to counter the security measures taken by the Karimganj administration. The media attention is much more focussed on the Cachar-Mizoram frontier. The amassing of personnel from the armed police battalion from the Mizoram side could well be seen on Assam land. Half of the RCC Bridge at Medlicherra is under Mizoram possession. The residents of the forest villages live in panic, particularly after sunset.

Amidst the tense situation, IGP (Law and Order) rushed to Karimganj; He was briefed by DFO JalnurRahman. He advised the DFO to file FIR (First Information Report) against the identified miscreants. Accordingly the DFO filed FIR against three Mizo miscreants at the Patharkandi Police Station. JalnurRahman told the media that during investigation, names of more miscreants are expected to figure. How the Mizo aggressors have taken the liberty to encroach upon Assam land and raise structures of are blatantly seen in their houses set up on the Assam land. These were subsequently set on fire and destroyed by the Forest department.

The MGNERGA officer of Mamit district has served show cause notice on the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj for destroying their project and farm house. A high official of the administration said that the Deputy Commissioner has simply ignored the notice, calling it undue interference. Why should we answer to such uncalled-for notice and justify the illegal and provocative aggressive acts? Local residents of the area living along the inter-State boundary allege they have seen a large number of Mizos armed with batons and swords led by volunteers of the 'Young Mizo Association' (YMA) moving in the reserve and plain areas of the Medlicherra Reserve Forest. Both the YMA and MZP (MizoZirlawi Pawl) are behind the aggression all along the three inter-State areas of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.

Yet another report is also disturbing. Frontier residents complain that though a large and strong armed force has been deployed in the areas by Karimganj administration, their role is not at all satisfactory. Though Deputy Commissioner Ambamuthun M. P., Superintendent of Police, M. Kumar and other high officials have been visiting the disturbed areas frequently, no concrete measures have been taken to free the Assam land from the Mizo aggressors.
