JIHADI ACTIVITIES

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a few more madrassas would get caught up in the police net.

The Chief Minister told the media, "We have already sealed two madrassas for their jihadi link. The government has the policy to seal madrassas if the government gets any concrete complaints regarding their jihadi link. The authorities will admit the students of the sealed madrassas in nearby general schools."

The Chief Minister said, "We have no government madrassas in the state. We have already closed down 750 government madrassas. We have allowed religious madrassas to continue in the state. However, if we get any concrete information on their link with fundamentalists, we will not have any second thought to take action against them."

According to official sources, the State Government is contemplating on introducing the registration of private madrassas in the state to stop them from running jihadi activities.

Two of the 12 people arrested in the state in the recent past for jihadi links are madrassa teachers – Mustafa Mufti and Amir Hanza– both hailing from the Morigaon district. Amir Hanza is a teacher of West Bherbheri Sobahi Madrassa.

According to a top police official, the jihadi elements blend with the local Muslim populace taking advantage of the demography in lower Assam. "Jihadi activities are going in the sars from Chhaygaon to the Naranarayan Bridge at Jogighopa. Such elements take advantage of the police not keeping a close watch on their activities due to communication bottlenecks," the police official said.
