Guwahati: The central government has decided to construct ropeways at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati and Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh under the Parvatmala Pariyojana. In addition to these, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed with four states in the Northeast-Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh-for implementation of ropeway projects under Parvatmala Pariyojana in coordination with state governments.
This was revealed in the recent annual report 2024-25 of the Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways (MoRTH). According to the report, it was announced in the Union Budget 2022 that the MoRTH has started a Development Programme-Parvatmala Pariyojana across the country to improve connectivity and convenience for commuters in hilly regions and to decongest urban areas where the conventional mode of transport is saturated or not feasible. Under this programme, the MoRTH envisages the provision of safe, economical, convenient, efficient, self-sustainable & world-class ropeway infrastructure, providing first- and last-mile connectivity to improve logistics efficiency in India.
Under the Parvatmala Pariyojana, ropeway projects of less than 60 km in length are planned for award by FY 2024-25. Out of these, the ropeway at Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) of 3.85 km is under construction. Additionally, 3 ropeway projects of 4.93 km length are awarded, viz. Bijli Mahadev (Himachal Pradesh), Dhosi Hill (Haryana), and Mahakaleshwar Temple (Madhya Pradesh). Further, a preferred bidder has been identified for 2 projects of 3.25 km at Sangam (Uttar Pradesh) and Shankaracharya Temple (Jammu and Kashmir). Additionally, bids for the Tikitoriya Mata temple (Madhya Pradesh) project have been received and are under evaluation, it was stated. The report further mentions that the bids for 7 projects of 53.28 km length have been invited, viz., Sonprayag-Kedarnath (Uttarakhand), Govindghat Hemkund Sahib (Uttarakhand), Kamakhya Temple (Assam), Tawang Monastery-PT Tso Lake (Arunachal Pradesh), Kathgodam Hanuman Garhi Temple, Nainital (Uttarakhand), Ramtek Gad Temple (Maharashtra), and Brahmagiri to Anjaneri (Maharashtra). Moreover, Detailed Feasibility Study is in progress for an additional 12 projects of 39 km length.
In addition to the above, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed with 13 states/UTs, viz. Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra for the implementation of ropeway projects under the Parvatmala Pariyojana in coordination with the State Government/UT Administration concerned.
