GUWAHATI: The Congress has named young MP from Assam Gaurav Gogoi its deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, a development having significant political ramifications ahead of the Monsoon session of the Parliament. It is seen as a move by the Congress to strengthen its team of floor leaders in the Parliament. The Opposition party did not have a deputy leader in the Lok Sabha till now.

Gogoi, MP from the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency in Assam was the party's whip in the House till now and has been elevated. He is the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

The news of Gaurav Gogoi appointed as the deputy leader in the Lok Sabha has enthused leaders and workers in Assam Congress.

"Gaurav has been very articulate in the Parliament. He has been highlighting various issues of Assam in Lok Sabha in fluent English and Assamese. He is also raising national issues. The latest development is evident of Gaurav emerged as a strong, mature and dynamic political leader in the national arena," a senior Assam Congress leader said.
