GUWAHATI: The State Government has directed the Director-General of Police (DGP) to take a slew of measures regarding the recent firing incident in Nagaon.

The government accepted the inquiry report submitted by Additional Chief Secretary PK Barthakur into the firing by police personnel of the Anti-Narcotic Squad at Kacholukhowa Tiniali, Nagaon on the night of January 22, resulting in injury to one Kirti Kamal Bora.

Based on the recommendations of the inquiry committee, the State Home & Political Department has directed the DGP to "take a slew of measures regarding the firing incident".

The Home & Political Department has directed the DGP to take steps on disbanding the present form of Anti Narcotic Squad constituted by the Nagaon SP forthwith. The government has also directed to transfer of the two cases based on FIR filed by ABSI Pradeep Bania and Nilkamal Bora to the CID. Further, the government asked the DGP to conduct a departmental enquiry by a senior police officer regarding the role played by every police officer involved in the incident.

The government has also directed the DGP to suspend Pradeep Bania, ABSI immediately and to transfer all members of the Anti-Narcotic Squad, Nagaon other than the SP, and ABSI Pradeep Bania out of the Nagaon district immediately.

The government has also asked the DGP to ascertain the safety and security of witnesses of the case, besides taking action for creating adequate awareness amongst the public against drug abuse and to ensure action as per law on all drug-related cases and communicating the action taken report to the Home & Political Department at the earliest, a press release said.
