GUWAHATI: In a huge blow to the drug trafficking chain in the region, a team of the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) from the Sonapur Police Station, led by ADCP Bibekanand Das, achieved its biggest-ever drugs bust by seizing drugs worth over Rs 136 crore – 4.6 lakh Yaba tablets, 12 kg of methamphetamine and 1.5 kg of heroin from a truck at the Sonapur toll gate on Tuesday night.

According to ADCP Das, the team intercepted the truck (No. MN01 9937) and arrested two smugglers, who have been identified as Khangembam Mangi Singh (43) of Chingtham village under Khongjom Police Station in the Thoubal district of Manipur and Shagolsem Manglemjao Singh (32) of Sapam under Khongjom Police Station in the Thoubal district.

The drugs were being smuggled inside a secret compartment between the driver's cabin and the goods carriage space of the truck, the sources said.

The seized Yaba tablets alone are worth around Rs 69 crore (one tablet is worth around Rs 1,500), while the value of the seized methamphetamine is around Rs 60 crore and the heroin is valued at around Rs 7.5 crore.
