GUWAHATI: Good news for middle-class families as the State government has relaxed the criteria for getting certificates for people belonging to the EWS (Economically Weaker Section).
Candidates with EWS certificates have ten cent reservation in government jobs and admission into educational institutions.
According to an earlier government notification, middle-class families could not fulfil the criteria for getting EWS certificates. And they did not get such certificates in the state. The government had a relook into the matter and took the decision to help middle-class families also to get EWS facilities.
The government has published the modified criteria for the EWS certificate. Earlier, applicants should not possess more than 15 bighas of agricultural land and one bigha of residential land in rural areas to get an EWS certificate. In the relaxed criteria, a family possessing 30 bighas of agricultural land and two bighas of residential land in rural areas can also get such certificates.
Earlier, families possessing a maximum of 4320 sq ft of land in notified municipal corporations, municipal boards and town committees were eligible for such certificates. However, now the government has relaxed the possession of land to 8640 sq ft of land in any of the notified urban areas.
Earlier, the maximum house-built-up area of a family to get an EWS certificate was 1,000 sq ft in notified urban areas. A family with a 2,000 sq ft house-built-up area is also eligible for an EWS certificate now, provided its annual income does not exceed Rs 8 lakh.
The Government of India launched the EWS reservation in 2019.
