No long-term rectification done for 249 black spots on National Highways in Northeast states

There have been no long-term rectification measures adopted by the authorities concerned for 249 black spots identified on the National Highways (NHs) in the Northeast region.

Guwahati: There have been no long-term rectification measures adopted by the authorities concerned for 249 black spots identified on the National Highways (NHs) in the Northeast region. There are a total of 410 black spots identified across the NHs in eight NE states, including Assam. Assam has the highest of 236 such black spots among the NE states.

Road development agencies divide the rectification measures for black spots into short-term and long-term. Of the 410 identified black spots in the NE, road development agencies have adopted long-term measures for 161 identified black spots.

According to available statistics, of the 236 black spots in Assam, long-term rectification measures were taken for only 67 black spots. Short-term rectification measures were adopted for the rest.

Similarly, there are 9 black spots identified in Arunachal Pradesh, of which long-term rectification measures were taken for 4 black spots, and short-term measures have been taken for the rest.

Manipur has 27 black spots, and long-term rectification measures were adopted for 14 such spots. Neighbouring Meghalaya has 55 black spots on the NHs, of which long-term measures were taken for 20 black spots. Mizoram has 2 black spots identified, and long-term rectification has been done for 1 spot. Nagaland has 40 black spots on its NHs, and long-term measures were adopted for 39 of them. Sikkim has 19 black spots, and long-term measures were adopted for 5 of the spots. Tripura has 22 black spots, of which 11 have seen long-term measures being taken for rectification.

The central government has finalized the criteria for the identification of road accident spots as black spots depending on the number of accidents in three consecutive calendar years involving fatalities and grievous injuries. Based on the road accident data provided by all the State/UT governments, the Centre has identified 13,795 black spots on various National Highways (NHs) in the country. Out of the total 13,795 black spots identified on the NHs in the country, long-term rectification has been completed on 5,036 black spots.
