GUWAHATI: The Assam Assembly election is 14 months away. However, the BJP is in full gear right now. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked all party MLAs to complete all developmental works of their respective constituencies by October this year, a criterion that has much to do with them getting party tickets for the Assembly poll.
In a review meeting with party MPs and MLAs, the Chief Minister told the MLAs in no uncertain terms that the list of probable candidates for the Assembly poll will depend largely on their performance cards. He asked the party MLAs to go to their respective constituencies at the end of October and involve themselves in organizational and social activities.
According to sources, the Chief Minister asked the party MLAs to maintain good rapport with senior citizens of their respective LACs and handle social media with the utmost care. The Chief Minister also stressed that the party MLAs perform their organizational activities meticulously from the grassroots level.
According to sources, the Chief Minister’s target is winning 100 Assembly seats by the BJP-led alliance and 70 seats by the BJP alone. To meet the figure of 70, the Chief Minister has geared up the party organizations right now. He does not want to leave any loopholes that may spell disaster for his target.
According to sources, the Chief Minister is not happy with the performance of around 20 MLAs. This indicates that some new faces may make it to the panel of candidates for party tickets. The Chief Minister is not ready to leave any room for complacency in upper Assam after the party’s defeat in the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency last year.
