No Teachers' Eligibility Test for primary schools: Education Minister Ranoj Pegu

GUWAHATI: State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said that the Education Department will not hold TET (teachers' eligibility test) for lower primary and upper primary schools and hold TET-cum-recruitment test for high schools and higher secondary schools instead of TET.

The minister said this at the ceremonial distribution of appointment letters in the Education Department at the Muchkhowa ITA Centre here today. The department distributed appointment letters to 318 candidates as teachers.

Pegu said, "We are not going to hold TET for LP and UP teachers for two years. The aspiring candidates can sit for C-TET (Central TET), which takes place twice a year, and the department will accept their eligibility. In the case of high schools and higher secondary schools, we will hold a TET-cum-recruitment test instead of TET. We did hold TET for high schools and higher secondary schools earlier. Many of the TET-qualified candidates are yet to get jobs. In fact, qualifying for the TET means being eligible to apply for the post of teacher. However, the TET-cum-recruitment test will select candidates for the vacant posts only."

On Sixth Schedule areas, the Minister said, "The decision lies with the administration in the Sixth Schedule areas. If they make the decision to hold the TET, we will conduct it for them only. Only the Education Department has the right to hold TET".

On the Shiksha Setu Portal, the minister said, "This portal is not only a medium to keep watch on teachers' attendance. Through this portal, we keep in touch with students, teachers, and their databases, as well as the entire educational atmosphere in the state. We are making facilities for teachers to send their applications to the department through this portal."

The department distributed appointment letters to 318 candidates as teachers: 27 as assistant professors and other posts in higher education, 50 lecturers under the SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training), and 241 Divyang assistant teachers in primary schools. Since May 2021, the Education Department has appointed 30,853 candidates in various posts.

The minister further said that the department would advertise for the filing of 13,000 vacant posts shortly.
