Win for BJP, allies in NE states

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: With the BJP emerging as the single largest party in Tripura, the NPP in Meghalaya, and the NDPP in Nagaland, there is no possibility of a change in the chief ministers in the three northeastern states.

The BJP won 32 seats in the 60-member Tripura Assembly. In its first appearance in the Assembly poll fray in the state, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) came in second with 13 seats. The CPI-M that ruled the state for decades came in third with 11 seats, and the Congress won three seats.

After the results were announced, TMP chief Pradyut Bikram Manikya Deb Barma said, “We are the second largest party. We will sit as the constructive Opposition. We will help the government as and when they need it.”

In Meghalaya, the NPP won 26 of the 59 seats where elections were held. The UDP came in second with 11 seats. First timer TMC and the Congress won five seats each.

In Nagaland, the ruling NDA ally NDPP won 25 of the 60 seats in the Assembly. The BJP won 12 seats, and the Congress drew a blank.

Meanwhile, at the victory of the BJP and its allies in the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the BJP headquarters that “the Northeast is neither far from Delhi, nor from the heart. The people in the Northeast voted for the BJP and its allies based on the commitment of the government at the Centre towards the region. The BJP’s win in the Tripura Assembly election is a vote for progress and stability. The party will continue to boost the state’s growth trajectory.”
