GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that not all sitting BJP MLAs would get tickets in the 2026 Assembly elections. The statement from the Chief Minister came after the conclusion of the party’s two-day Chintan Baithak held at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati on Sunday.
Addressing the media today, the Chief Minister said that due to the recent delimitation exercise, several Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) have undergone changes, besides the increase in the number of reserved seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). “As a result, the emergence of new faces is a must. Thus, not all sitting MLAs of the party will get tickets. And many of the party MLAs are not interested in fighting the poll,” he said.
The Chief Minister further said that the performance of BJP MLAs and ministers, particularly in implementing government schemes in their respective constituencies, would be one of the criteria for getting party tickets. “The government is going to launch various schemes on August 15 as promised during the Lok Sabha poll and the panchayat poll. The MLAs and ministers can improve their performance cards through proper implementation of the forthcoming schemes. That will let the higher-ups in the party assess their performances better,” he said.
The Chief Minister said that the BJP discusses issues related to elections, preparations of manifestos, campaign strategy, issues and narratives to focus on, and the like, besides taking feedback from as many as 51 MLAs, ministers, and senior party leaders. Both central and state leaders of the party take the feedback for making the party roadmap for the election, he said.
Reaffirming party alliances, the Chief Minister also declared that the BJP’s alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) would ‘continue forever.’
Earlier, BJP’s state president, Dilip Saikia, dropped a broad hint that around 22 sitting MLAs could be denied tickets, warning non-performing legislators to improve their performances ahead of the polls.
