GUWAHATI: Amidst the pandemic, politics is set to beat the corona heat in Assam where the Assembly election is coming closer. Of late, alliances of every political hue have started to take the centre stage.

The stage is set for the floating of a number of regional political fronts and parties in the State. With which bigger political formation or formations these smaller regional parties or forums will team up is still to be seen. The hottest among the probable alliances is the one between the Congress and the AIUDF.

And it has come to the fore that the BJP in the State is using the Congress-AIUDF alliance as a weapon in its arsenal. On Thursday, NEDA (North East Democratic Alliance) convener Himanta Biswa Sarma went on record saying, "The BJP in Assam will restrict the Congress-AIUDF alliance to 20-25 seats only. It's unfortunate for the people of Assam that the Congress has teamed up with Badruddin Ajmal for the sake of politics.

"It's the birthday of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev today. On this auspicious day, the buzzword in the State is Ajmal. What's in store for the Assamese? However, we're doing everything to prevent Ajmal from entering the 'Borghor'."

It is up to the NEDA convener as to what he said on the Congress-AIUDF alliance. However, it's a fact that this alliance has posed a threat to the BJP in lower Assam.

The initiative being taken by the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) is likely to harm the BJP in Upper Assam where the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) sentiment is still fresh even after the agitations against the Act have been subdued by the corona pandemic. The AASU is trying to en cash this sentiment. And gauzing the situation well, the BJP has started to do all sorts of activities in tea estate areas.

There may be small parties or forums, including those of Akhil Gogoi and Ajit Kumar Bhuyan. Which way these smaller parties and forums will incline is something to keep tabs on. While the Congress has kept its door open for other political fronts to join the alliance so as to topple the BJP, the BJP says that floating of new regional parties will only benefit it as the people of the State are aware of what the party-led government has done for them.

Ridden with infighting, the AGP has almost been polarized towards party resident Atul Bora and founder president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. It is also certain that the regional party is going to leave a few of its existing Assembly seats to the BJP. AGP MLA Pabindra Deka has already started to revolt against the party for its move to leave the Patacharkuchi seat to the BJP. Deka has made it to the Assembly from Patacharkuchi LAC.

Some of the MLAs of the Congress and the AIUDF are also not satisfied with the alliance between the two parties. Some Lower Assam Congress MLAs are not happy as they may have to leave their respective LACs to make way for the AIUDF. A few other Congress MLAs in Upper Assam are not satisfied either as they feel that shaking hands with Ajmal may backfire as the Assamese sentiment still rules the roost in Upper Assam. Already MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi has openly opposed the party's tie-up with the AIUDF.
