NRC: Assam Requires 145 Additional Companies of CAPF

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: With the National Register of Citizens (NRC) set to be published on August 31 under the supervision of the Supreme Court, the Assam government is preparing the security blueprint in the post-publication phase. Also monitored by the Centre, Dispur is carrying out assessment of the vulnerability areas. Assam will be requiring additional 145 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), informed sources. The State police have already chalked out a security plan for the post-NRC publication scenario.

Along with the Assam Police personnel, the CAPF personnel look after the regular law-and-order situation and also the NRC-related security work. The requirement for NRC-related security purpose was 254 CAPF companies; however, 164 companies are available at present. So the shortfall is 90 companies. Meanwhile of the CAPF companies for regular law-and-order maintenance, 55 were recently shifted from the State with the majority taken to Jammu and Kashmir. Now the overall shortfall is 145 companies in the State. The State government will take up the matter with the Centre shortly.
