GUWAHATI: For the first time, counseling has started for admissions to various MBBS courses in the seven medical colleges across the State. The first round of counseling started on November 6. It will continue till November 14.

"In the previous years, counseling for admission was used to be held centrally at the Gauhati Medical College. But the current pandemic situation has forced the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) to conduct the counseling exercise online. Students are cooperating and the online counseling is so far going smooth," said an official at the DME office.

There are 1,000 seats for the MBBS courses in the seven medical colleges (including the newly started Diphu Medical College) in the State. Of these seats, 15 per cent seats will be reserved for the all-India quota.

The DME, Assam will start admission to 85 per cent of the seats under the State quota after the counseling exercise concludes. The State merit list of deserving candidates chalked out by the Medical Counseling Committee will be strictly followed in case of admission.

After the online counseling, the students will go to the medical colleges for admission. The admission committees of the respective colleges will thoroughly verify the testimonials of candidates. The classes for first year MBBS courses in the State's medical colleges will start from December 15 this year.

On the other hand, the State's medical colleges are likely to witness high cut-off marks for admissions into the undergraduate medical courses (MBBS) due to the sharp increase in the number of top scorers in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG)-2020.

In 2019, the cut-off mark for admission into the Gauhati Medical College for the general category students was 547 (out of 720 marks in NEET) followed by 512 in Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh; 500 in Silchar Medical College; 496 in Jorhat Medical College; 487 in Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College, Barpeta; and 481 in the Tezpur Medical College. The cut-off mark was less for the reserved categories of students such as the SCs, STs, OBCs and the Economically Weaker Section.
