Over 1,300 rape cases registered in 7 months across Assam

GUWAHATI: Altogether 1,326 rape cases were registered across the state in the first seven months of 2021 (from January 1 to July 31).

Assam Police sources informed that 641 such cases were related to girl victims below 18 years while 685 cases were of women victims above 18 years of age.

In the last six years from 2016 to July 31, 2021, altogether 18,693 rape cases were registered in the state. Of them, 7,607 cases were related to girl victims below 18 years while 11,086 cases were of women victims above the 18 years category.

A total of 13,943 charge sheets were filed against 15,447 persons during the mentioned period. However, the number of persons against whom charge sheets were filed does not include the figures for 2021.

According to the source, 821 rape cases registered in 2016 were related to girl victims below 18 years of age. In 2017, the figure stood at 1,149 followed by 1,721 cases in 2018; 1,779 cases in 2019; 1,496 cases in 2020; and 641 rape cases in 2021 (up to July 31).

Similarly, the number of rape cases (of women above 18 years of age) in 2016 was 1,779. The number of such cases in 2017 was 3,544; in 2018 it was 1,648; in 2019, it stood at 1,773; in 2020, the number was 1,657; in 2021 (up to July 31), the number of such rape cases was 685.
