Over 20 lakh people may become jobless in Assam, says AMDB Chairman Mominul Aowal

GUWAHATI: Around 20 to 25 lakh people may become jobless across the State till the lockdown is over, said Assam Minority Development Board (AMDB) Chairman Mominul Aowal on Monday.

Talking to The Sentinel, Aowal said that the lockdown has shackled the economy of the State and lakhs of people have lost their sources of income.

He stressed that after the lockdown is over, the Government will have to introduce economic measures to revive the economy.

“Around 10 lakh people who are working in small businesses will lose their jobs. The 15 lakh migrant workers who arrived to the State will also not return to their workplaces as the employment opportunities have declined due to the lockdown. It will be a challenge for the government to provide employment to these people,” he stated. However, Aowal also pointed out that due to the lockdown employment opportunities will increase in various sectors, especially in the medical department.

“The government will have to focus on the Agriculture, Veterinary and Fishery sectors. Most of the commodities related to these sectors are exported from other States. Thus, the State will have to focus on producing such commodities. However, the transition for these workers will be hard; and they will have to receive proper training. These people need to register themselves with the government,” Aowal added.

Aowal further said that he has forwarded these suggestions to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who has assured that he will discuss the matter with the departments concerned.
