GUWAHATI: The online classes amidst the COVID-19 pandemic had adverse impact on the students pursuing the MBBS course in six medical colleges in the State.

The first professional examination of MBBS 2021, the results of which were declared on Wednesday evening, has registered only 58.67 pass percentage. Over 40% students could not clear the examination. The examination was conducted by the 'Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences' in February this year. Out of 893 who appeared in the examination 524 have passed the test.

"This was the first batch which appeared in the examination by following the new MBBS syllabus. After 22 years, the old MBBS syllabus was replaced by new MBBS syllabus also called as new MCI curriculum in 2019. These students who took admission in 2019 had lost a year to do physical classes on the new MBBS syllabus due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and consequent nation-wide lockdown.

"Classes were held online which was not enough for many students to understand the new syllabus. Online classes cannot be an alternative for vast and tough syllabus of MBBS," said a faculty at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital.

Significantly, a large number of students from the three old medical colleges namely Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh and Silchar Medical College & Hospital have failed in the examination. Many students from Jorhat Medical College & Hospital, Tezpur Medical College & Hospital and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College & Hospital, Barpeta could not clear the test.

"I could not clear many of doubts through online classes. I live in a remote village in Barpeta and poor internet connection often came in my way to attend online classes regularly. I knew that I will not do well in the examination," explained a student of GMC&H who could not clear the examination.
