KASHMIR: In one of the major attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, killing at least 27 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, took responsibility for the attack, intelligence sources said.
Terrorists targeted a group of people, including women and elderly individuals, in the brazen attack after noon. Eyewitnesses told security forces that two to three men rushed in dressed in military fatigues, firing indiscriminately at tourists while they were enjoying the Baisaran Meadows of Pahalgam on horseback.
Security forces were rushed to the area, and a massive anti-terrorist operation was launched to hunt down the assailants. Videos of the aftermath of the attack showed people lying motionless and bloodied on the ground while women were frantically looking for their loved ones. Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, describing it as an “abomination”. He said the details of the death toll are still being ascertained and called the attack “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years”.
Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday paid ‘heartfelt’ condolences to the families who have lost their dear ones in the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam and also prayed for the quick recovery of the injured ones. In a post on X, the Rashtrapati Bhavan handle said that the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam of Jammu and Kashmir is shocking and painful.
"The terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, is shocking and painful. It is a dastardly and inhuman act which must be condemned unequivocally. Attacking innocent citizens, in this case tourists, is utterly appalling and unpardonable," the post reads. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha rushed to Srinagar, and they were reviewing the situation. (Agencies)
