GUWAHATI: In what can be called an engineering excellence, the construction firm has been erecting piles of the bridge connecting Palasbari and Sualkuchi across the Brahmaputra by digging wells as deep as 56 metres beneath the riverbed.
The work of the 12.21-km bridge project is currently underway on either bank of the Brahmaputra and the river. The project has two parts – the 8.61-km road part and the 3.60-km bridge part.
The bridge part has 25 piles that are being erected now in phases. As per the design of the bridge, the piles need to be erected by digging wells 56 metres beneath the riverbed.
According to Assam PWD sources, around 20 per cent work on the bridge project is over as of now, besides the road parts on either bank of the river. The completion schedule of the project is June 2028. This bridge is longer than the 1.20-km bridge being constructed over the Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati.
The looks of these two bridges will be a bit different from each other. The Palasbari-Sualkuchi bridge project, including viaduct, approaches and river training centre works, is being constructed under the Assam Bridge Project (ABP) II with NDB (New Development Bank) funding. Of the total cost of the projects, Rs 3197.20 crore, NDB will bear 80 per cent and the remaining 20 per cent by the state government.
Larsen and Toubro (L&T) is the construction company engaged in this project.
