GUWAHATI: The Abhibhabok Oikya Manch, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara, Guwahati sent a memorandum to the Commissioner of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), New Delhi on Friday demanding the introduction of the Assamese language as a compulsory subject from Class I to X in the school.
Parents and guardians, through their memorandum, informed the KVS Commissioner that the principal and school authority of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara had agreed to start the teaching-learning process of the Assamese language from Class VI to VIII.
“But the fact is that language is such a subject the teaching of which ought to be started from Class I with a child-centric approach,” the memorandum said. The Manch has opposed the arrangement of teaching Assamese for students from Class VI to VIII after regular classes at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara.
The development came close on the heels of the Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara, who recently had informed parents and guardians that teaching of any additional subject (regional (Assamese in case of Assam & foreign language) could be considered beyond the normal school hours if 15 or more students opt for learning such subjects. The Principal was referring to a letter issued by the KVS, New Delhi on March 29, 2019 to all central schools in the country. Parents said the letter clearly implies that teaching Assamese is not at all a priority for the Kendriya Vidyalaya.
On the other hand, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has warned that any school ignoring or neglecting teaching of the Assamese language will not be tolerated. The students’ organization has asked the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara to make teaching of the Assamese language compulsory from Class I to X.
The Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) has sought urgent intervention of the Assam government to compel the Kendriya Vidyalayas across the State to introduce the Assamese language as a compulsory subject for all students.
