GUWAHATI: The Assam government has decided to distribute land pattas to around one lakh more landless indigenous people in 2021. This decision follows the successful distribution of more than one lakh land pattas to such beneficiaries in 2020 alone.

Talking to The Sentinel, Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan said, "As per the direction from Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal, our department is taking this initiative on a mission mode. This is the first time in Assam that such distributions of land pattas and land-allotment certificates have been undertaken among the indigenous landless residents across the State."

The Minister added, "For the next phase of the initiative in 2021, the CM has set the target of 1 lakh beneficiaries. The Department has already directed the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and the Sub Divisional Officers (SDOs) — Civil to prepare the documents in this regard by December 31, 2020. The distribution is expected to take place in the first part of the following year."

Meanwhile, State Chief Secretary (CS) JishnuBarua on Thursday discussed the issue of land-patta distribution with the DCs of 26 districts via video conferencing. The CS directed the DCs to identify the beneficiaries and prepare the lists within the stipulated time. During the meeting, the DCs informed the CS that documents of 45,000 beneficiaries have been prepared till date. Top officials of the Department were also present during the meeting.

Of the 33 districts in Assam, this distribution process of land pattas and land-allotment certificates will, however, exclude the seven districts under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India. This is because in these seven districts, the respective Councils distribute the land pattas. These seven districts include Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri in the Bodoland Territorial Region; KarbiAnglong, West KarbiAnglong; besides DimaHasao.
