'ORUNODOI MONTH' LAUNCHED

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: "We have been receiving good responses from the public to legitimate appeals made by the government for good causes and this is a very encouraging sign," Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said while launching the 'Orunodoi Month' here on Saturday.

Sarma mentioned that in response to the government's appeal for voluntary relinquishment of Orunodoi benefits by persons who have attained financial security, as many as 459 beneficiaries have already withdrawn their names from the beneficiaries' list on the very first day of the launch of Orunodoi Month. The Chief Minister said that he expects this number to increase manifold in response to the government's appeal for voluntary relinquishment.

It may be mentioned that door-to-door verification of 20 lakh beneficiaries of the scheme will be conducted during Orunodoi Month and the verification will be done not by government officials, but by student volunteers from the NCC, NSS, NYC, Bharat Scouts & Guides etc. The reports submitted from the field by these volunteers will be considered as final by the officials concerned.

Once the verification process is completed and the beneficiaries' list is revised, the bona fide beneficiaries will receive an amount of Rs 1,250 each from October onwards in place of the current amount of Rs 1,000 each. The additional amount of Rs 250 is meant for payment of electricity bills. On the other hand, referring to the hue and cry over Education Minister Ranoj Pegu's written appeal to all MLAs for enlisting donors for providing amenities to government and provincialized schools, the Chief Minister said that this is a process that is going on all over India. He pointed out that it is an appeal and not a demand.

"What is the harm if an ex-student provides a fan or any other amenity to the school where he/she studied?," Sarma asked, and said that a section of people is unnecessarily making this an issue for debate. He further said that the public will respond positively to this particular appeal of the government as well.
