GUWAHATI: "It's very dangerous that 80 per cent of the populace across Assam is not following the basic COVID-19 protocols even though the threat from the pandemic has not at all subsided". Stating this, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma further said, "By not wearing masks and not maintaining social distancing, they are posing threats to themselves and others. I've personally seen many people violating these pandemic protocols."

Addressing a meeting at the Guwahati Medical College auditorium on Thursday, Minister Sarma pointed out, "Of late, the number of casualties due to COVID-19 infection has been rising. A few days back, it was four to five deaths in a day; but on Wednesday the number jumped to 10. Vaccines are yet to be developed. Against this dangerous backdrop, the people must act responsibly, and seriously follow the protocols."

Earlier during the occasion, handing over appointment letters to 230 nurses recruited to the newly constructed Lakhimpur Medical College & Hospital, Minister Sarma said, "Already 95% work of this medical college & hospital has been completed. We're planning to inaugurate it by November this year.

"Construction works of three other medical colleges-cum-hospitals are in full swing. These institutes are at Dhubri, Tinsukia, and Nagaon. On the other hand, the initial formalities have been started with regard to three other medical colleges at Biswanath Chariali, Charaideo, and Goalpara."

With respect to AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) coming up at Changsari in Kamrup, he said, "The institute's academic year will commence from November 1, 2020."
