Police arrests 25 more PFI (Popular Front of India) members in Assam

GUWAHATI/BILASIPARA/SILCHAR: The Assam Police crackdown on the PFI (Popular Front of India) today led to the arrest of 25 of its members, including college and school teachers, imams, student leaders, businessmen and others. The police also registered cases against the PFI members in different districts.

The state police forces arrested 11 PFI members on September 22, 2022.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The police will intensify its operation against PFI."

The Chief Minister urged the Centre on many occasions to ban the PFI for their alleged terror activities in Assam.

Ten of the PFI members arrested today are from Goalpara; five from Kamrup; three from Dhubri; two each from Barpeta and Baksa; and one each from Karimganj, Darrang and Udalguri.

Police arrested Abu Saleh from Bishfuti on the outskirts of Karimganj town today. Saleh is a B.Sc. student at Karimganj College. A local court sent him to 14 days of judicial custody.

Bilasipara Police in the Dhubri district arrested three PFI members from different places under Bilasipara Police Station.

Charges against the arrested PFI members are criminal conspiracy, sedition, promoting enmity between different groups, etc. A police source said that PFI leaders and members were making all-out efforts to foment communal strife throughout the state. They have been active in Assam since the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) agitation. Since then, the PFI has been on the radar of the Assam Police.

PFI's northeast regional secretary Aminul Haque, Assam unit president Abu Sama and general secretary Robiul Hussain are among the 36 PFI members arrested in Assam. The three PFI members are Abdul Hamid, a school teacher; Dhubri district PFI president Abdus Salam Talukdar and Lutfar Rahman.
