GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has asked doctors and nurses working in the seven government medical colleges, three dental colleges and two nursing colleges to strictly adhere to the two-child policy to help in controlling burgeoning population of the State.

Towards this end, the Director of Medical Education (DME), Assam, Dr Anup Kumar Barman recently dashed off letters to Principals and Superintendents of the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), Jorhat Medical College & Hospital (JMCH), Tezpur Medical College & Hospital (TMCH), Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College & Hospital (FAAMCH), Barpeta Medical College & Hospital (BMCH) and Diphu Medical College & Hospital (DMCH). The letter has asked the Principals and Superintendents to ensure total execution of the government policy on small-family norms among the doctors and the nurses.

A similar letter was sent to the Principals of Regional Dental College, Guwahati, Government Dental College, Dibrugarh, Government Dental College, Silchar, Regional College of Nursing, Guwahati, B.Sc. Nursing College, Dibrugarh and B.Sc Nursing College, Silchar.

Acting on the Population Policy passed in the Assam Assembly in 2017, the Assam Cabinet in 2019 decided that those with more than two children will not be eligible for government jobs from January 2021. The government has framed two rules: First, those who have a child after two children will not be eligible for a government job after January 1, 2021. Second, after January 1, 2021, action can be taken against those in government jobs who have a child after two children. These rules are applicable to permanent government job holders only. "The doctors and nurses serving at the government health institutions will have follow the norms of two children to serve as role models for the society," said a Health department official. He added that the doctors and nurses will have to submit a duly filled-up declaration form to the authorities concerned declaring the details of their family members.
