GUWAHATI: The officials of Sonapur Forest Division recovered the decomposed body of a pregnant elephant at a remote location in East Aprikola, along the Assam-Meghalaya border today.

The local people got the smell of the elephant carcass yesterday and informed the forest division of it. The forest officials, including veterinary doctors, located the carcass today. According to forest officials, the female elephant was killed a long time ago, with its trunk and muscles from its legs taken away. “We found that the around-30-year-old female elephant was pregnant. We doubt that the elephant was shot dead,” a forest official said.
