Prices of cement, TMT rods up now across Assam

GUWAHATI: At a time when hike in prices of all essential commodities has thoroughly ravaged the consumers across the State, now construction materials are burning big holes in the pockets of a section of them.

While cement prices have been hiked by Rs 7-10 per bag, prices of TMT rods have gone up by Rs by 5,000-6,000 per tonne.

When asked by The Sentinel, a cement trader in Guwahati said, "The prices of all local brands of cement like Star Cement, Dalmiya, Birla Gold among others have been hiked by Rs 7-10 per bag.

"Of course, there has been no hike in the prices of cement coming from other States.

"However, with this hike, while a bag of cement is sold at Rs 420-425, all local TMT rods and those coming from Durgapur are sold at Rs 48,000 per metric tonne. Earlier, such rods were sold at Rs 42,000 per tonne. The prices of branded rods have been hiked by Rs 1,500 per tonne."

When asked on the reason behind such a hike in prices, the trader said, "The rise in cost of raw materials has led us to hike the prices of cement and rod."
