GUWAHATI: The R&DM (State Revenue and Disaster Management) Department has prepared a proposal to create 1,000 more 'lats' in the state. The Directorate of Land Records (DLR) has already sent the proposal to Dispur for examination and necessary action.
A 'lat' comprises the total lands under the jurisdiction of a Mandal in revenue circles. One of the objectives of creating more 'lats' is to streamline service delivery to the public.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Cabinet colleagues have noticed that the 'lats' in the state are too big, leading to heavy workloads on the mandals in charge. They have also noticed that a section of mandals takes undue advantage of heavy workloads in prioritizing their service delivery.
It led the Chief Minister and his Cabinet to take the policy decision to divide the too big mandals into smaller ones and to increase the number of mandals.
According to DLR sources, the Chief Minister and his Cabinet will decide the creation of more 'lats' in the state. The government will have to create more posts of mandals, leading to recruitments.
The department has not created 'lats' in the state for decades. At present, the state has around 2,400 'lats'.
