Protect Majuli from erosion: Xatradhikar

'CM will lay foundation stone of Auniati University'

GUWAHATI: Xatradhikar Dr Pitambar Dev Goswami of Auniati Xatra is happy to see some of the demands of the people of Majuli met at the initiative of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Chief Minister was camping in Majuli for the past two days when he inaugurated some projects and laid the foundation stones of some others. He also enjoyed the Raax festivals and visited many xatras during his stay.

Talking to The Sentinel after the Chief Minister's two-day visit to the river island, Dr Pitambar Dev Goswami said, "Majuli is the nerve centre of the xatriya culture. For a long time, xatras here have been propagating the Assamese culture and neo-Vaishnavism. However, the river island is under erosion threat that compelled the shifting of some xatras. We requested the Chief Minister to protect Majuli from the gobbling river. The Assamese culture will survive only if the Xatras survive the erosion scare.

"The Chief Minister laid the foundation stones of several water resources projects and inaugurated some other projects. Bhakatsapori in Majuli had been facing the wrath of erosion by the Brahmaputra. This government carried out some anti-erosion works at Bhakatsapori and gave the residents there a respite.

"We request the Chief Minister to speed up works of the projects during the dry season. The government should keep up the speed at which it has done the projects at Bhakatsapori.

"When the Chief Minister visited Majuli soon after winning the Assembly poll, we did request him to ensure ICU (intensive care unit) beds in Majuli. The lack of such beds makes patients move either to Lakhimpur or Jorhat. Yesterday, the Chief Minister inaugurated five ICU beds at Garamur Government Hospital in the river island. It is the uniqueness of this Chief Minister.

"When we met the Chief Minister yesterday, we told him of the Jorhat-Majuli bridge over the Brahmaputra. He let us know that the government would lay the foundation stone of the bridge on November 30, 2021. He also said that the government would complete the bridge before the next Assembly election in the state in 2026. The Chief Minister and the government will get the blessings of the people of Majuli after completing the proposed bridge.

"Auniati Xatra is set to set up a university named Auniati University. The Chief Minister will lay the foundation stone of the university on Sunday at Kaliapani near Teok in the Jorhat District. We have kept 60 bighas of land for the university.

"Apart from academics, this university will have the research of theological and historical erudite to recover them from extinction. It is a must as the new generation is oblivious of such erudite."
