COMMUNNALIZING NIZAMUDDIN INCIDENT

‘Vested interest misusing social media’

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Muslim citizens, imams of mosques and other religious leaders under the banner of Sarania Kabarastan Committee on Friday urged the Assam Government to take stringent actions against a section of politically motivated persons and other vested interest groups for using the social media to give communal colours to the Nizamuddin Markaj congregation incident.

Nekibur Zaman, president of Sarania Kabarastan Committee, said Muslim citizens, imams and other religious leaders on Friday held a meeting here and expressed grave concern over the present situation in the State. He said at a time when Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are doing everything possible to save the State from the fatal coronavirus, some vested groups are trying to create an atmosphere of unrest and tension by communalizing the Nizamuddin Markaj congregation.

It may be mentioned that 20 persons from Assam who attended the Nizamuddin congregation in Delhi, have been tested COVID-19 positive.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma has termed the incident of participants of Nizamuddin congregation proving COVID positive as an accident. But a section of politicians and vested interest groups are trying to create a Hindu-Muslim divide in Assam by making highly objectionable statements in the Facebook and other social media platforms. We urge the government to take legal actions against such individuals,” Zaman said.

Zaman said the Muslim society in greater Guwahati and other parts of Assam is ready to help the government to trace the missing participants of Nizamuddin Markaz congregation. “We urge the government to provide photos of the missing person. We will trace them out,” he said.

Zaman has also given an offer to the State Health Department to use the Pub Guwahati Iddgah at Islampur area in the city to be used as an isolation centre for COVID-19 patients.
