GUWAHATI: As many as 13 of the 23 public-sector industries have been closed in Assam since 2006, and three of the remaining ten in the state are inoperative.

According to an official of the Department of Industries and Commerce, some of the 23 industries in the state also included ones incorporated in 1955, 1960, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1979, etc.

The operational public sector industries in Assam are: Assam Tea Corporation Ltd (ATCL), Assam Petrochemicals Ltd (APL), Assam Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (AMSCL), Assam Hydrocarbon & Energy Company Ltd (AHECL), Assam State Textbook Production & Publication Corporation Ltd (ASTPPCL), Assam Plantation Crops Development Corporation Ltd (APCDCL), and Assam Co-operative Jute Mills Ltd (ACJML). The three inoperative public-sector industries in the state are Assam State Fertilizer & Chemicals Ltd. (ASFCL), Ashok Paper Mills (Assam) Ltd., and Assam Polyester Co-operative Society Ltd. (APCSL).

According to the official, the State Government had to close its 13 public-sector industries due to various reasons, including loss-making and a fall in production. Ten public-sector industries were closed under the Assam Government and Public Resource Management Programme (AGPRMP). The ten industries are: Fertichem Ltd. closed in 2006, Assam Syntax Ltd. closed in 2008, Assam Spun Silk Mills Ltd. closed in 2006, Assam Conductors & Tubes Ltd. closed in 2006, Industrial Papers (Assam) Ltd. closed in 2008, Assam State Textiles Corporation Ltd. closed in 2007, Assam State Weaving & Manufacturing Co. Ltd. closed in 2006, Assam Powerloom Development Corporation Ltd. closed in 2006, Cachar Sugar Mills Ltd. closed in 2007, Assam Cooperative Sugar Mills Ltd. 2010

The remaining three state-owned industries, Nagaon Co-operative Sugar Mill Ltd., Assam Co-operative Spinning Mills Ltd., and Swahid Kushal Konwar Samabai Sutakol Ltd., were closed in 2011 under the state budget.
