GUWAHATI: A murder in broad daylight near one of the most important landmarks of Guwahati city has shocked people, sending shivers down their spines.

Ranjit Bora, a Purabi Dairy distributor, was shot at by motorcycle-borne miscreants at around 11 am to 11.30 am today in the Panjabari area of the city near the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra. According to police sources, Bora was going to deposit money in the ICICI Bank, Panjabari branch. He was about to alight from his car (Wagon R with registration number AS01BH5022) when two motorcycle-borne youths came and tried to snatch his money bag. A struggle ensued and suddenly, one of the youths fired at Bora. A bullet pierced his neck and he collapsed on the car seat.

Sources added that the miscreants sped away in their bike towards the Panjabari side. They were wearing black helmets and hence could not be identified.

Meanwhile, the police were informed. Bora was taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) but the doctors declared him brought dead. GMCH Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma told media persons that Bora had succumbed to his injuries by the time he was brought to the hospital. He had an entry wound on the right side of the neck and an exit wound on the left side.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh said, "We have some leads and our investigation is underway. The culprits will be caught. Such a thing cannot go unpunished."

According to police sources, there was around Rs 2.5 lakh-Rs 3 lakh cash in Bora's bag. Police have collected CCTV camera footage from nearby shops.

On the other hand, family members have questioned why the police took Bora to GMCH in Bhangagarh when prominent private hospitals are there near the crime scene.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while addressing media persons later in the evening, said that the police had obtained some leads in the incident. "Looting money appears to be the main motive behind the shooting. I hope the police will be able to crack the case soon and arrest the perpetrators," he said.

He added, "CCTV camera footage has been obtained but as the youths were earing black helmets, their faces could not be seen. Moreover, the bike used for executing the crime did not have a number plate."
