GUWAHATI: The State Executive Council (SEC) of the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) has approved the state PWD (Public Works Department) to procure ten ‘Width Steel Deck Bailey Bridges’ for the immediate restoration of important road communications when they are snapped.
The state received a body blow from floods and landslides in 2022. The State government got a lesson from the snapping of some very important road communications, making the public have a harrowing time. The State Government could restore the breaches of the important roads to and from the Dima Hasao district after a long time in 2022. That lesson made the government prepare a disaster exercise plan in advance this year.
The State Executive Committee of the ASDMA met recently with the Chief Secretary in the chair. The state PWD placed a proposal for the procurement of ten ‘Width Steel Deck Bailey Bridges’ for the restoration of important road communications if and when they are breached during floods and other disasters like landslides.
Taking all pros and cons into consideration, the Chief Secretary, who chaired the State Executive Committee meeting, approved the PWD’s request to procure ten ‘Width Steel Deck Bailey Bridges’, each measuring 130 feet. The SEC also approved Rs 18.44 crore for the procurement of the ten Bailey Bridges.
The SEC, however, made it clear that the PWD should procure the ten ‘Width Steel Deck Bailey Bridges’ of TSR Standard only, and by following the national competitive bidding process and all necessary procedures for procurement.
A Bailey bridge is a factory-made truss bridge. It was developed by the British during World War II for military use.
