Raax Mahotsav To Be A Mega Affair This Year

GUWAHATI: With the advent of the Raax Mahotsav, the State government is in ardent preparation to make this festival a grander and larger occasion than ever before. This culturally and spiritually rich occasion has enough potential to ensure more footfall of tourists in the State.

ATDC (Assam Tourism Development Corporation) Chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah said that the Raax Mahotsav in Majuli is being given prominence this year. He hopes that the State will be teeming with tourists during the festival.

“We have aired advertisements for the Raax in Majuli from November 11 to 15 and in Nalbari from November 12 to 24. Not just in Assam, the festival will be observed all over India and abroad. We hope there will be an increase in tourists’ inflow. As there are no proper lodging facilities in Majuli, we have arranged special luxury cozy tents for the tourists,” said Baruah.

He further stated that a special package of Rs 6,000 – which includes travel expenses, food and lodging – has been introduced. Online bookings will open from October 15. Special ASTC buses will ply from Guwahati to Majuli, Dibrugarh to Majuli and also from Lakhimpur to Majuli.

“We are expecting more than two lakh tourists this year. We plan to make the Mahotsav bigger than the Ambubachi Mela. We’re hopeful that this festival will start a movement, both in India and abroad. Luxury tents will be placed at three locations and from where local buses have been arranged for the comfort of the tourists,” said Baruah.

As the river is the only source to freshen up, the district administration has been asked to tighten security to ascertain that no mishaps occur and special changing rooms for women are constructed. Moreover, another special attraction of the package includes a tour of the Guwahati city. Special ASTC buses will take the tourists to various destination spots within the city. These buses will run every 15 to 30 minutes. Provisions for the Nalbari Raax Mahotsav are the same as the ones made for Majuli.
