GUWAHATI: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha that the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) had included content about geography, history and culture of the Northeast in social science textbooks from Class VI to XII. It, the Minister said, is to promote awareness of the region among students across India.

The Union Minister said that all such measures were to check the racial discrimination on and off university campuses against students from the Northeast in Delhi and other metropolitan cities. The Minister was replying to a question on racial attacks on the students of the Northeast.

Minister Rai further said, "The Government of India has issued advisories/instructions to the state/UT governments regarding an action plan for providing security to the people from the Northeast, the appointment of nodal officers in states/UTs to address the grievances of people from Northeast, and sensitization of enforcement agencies to take appropriate action in case of harassment. The Ministry of Home Affairs has set up a three-member committee for this purpose."

On January 29, 2014, a student from Arunachal Pradesh, Nido Nanian, died in a racial attack in New Delhi. The Ministry of Home Affairs formed a committee headed by MP Bezbaruah to examine the cause behind attacks/discrimination against the people of the Northeast, to examine various kinds of concerns regarding the security of Northeast people, and to suggest measures to address such concerns etc.

The committee submitted its report to the government with some recommendations. Rai said that the government implemented many recommendations of the committee.
