GUWAHATI: After a spell of sweltering heat in the past few days, the people of Assam are likely to get a respite as the India Metrological Department (IMD), regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, predicted an increase in rainfall in Assam in the next five days. It is further predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over Assam on September 21 and 22.

The IMD issued a special weather bulletin for Assam today. It said, “Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over the Northwest and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the West Bengal-Odisha coasts. Associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward with height. It is likely to move west-northwestwards across North Odisha and South Jharkhand during the next two days. Associated with this system, fairly widespread to wide-spread rainfall activity with heavy rainfall or thunderstorms is very likely to occur over Assam during the next two days. Moisture incursion due to strong low-level southerly and southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India is very likely to occur from September 21 onwards. Under its influence, widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Assam during September 21–22, 2023”.

Dudhnoi received the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours in Assam, where the maximum temperature was 1.6 degrees Celsius to 3 degrees Celsius above normal yesterday.

A separate IMD bulletin also predicted an increase in rainfall activity over the northeastern region for the next five days.
