RED ALERT: Heavy rains to hit Assam & Meghalaya till Thursday

GUWAHATI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Borjhar has warned that Assam, Meghalaya and many other parts of the North East will experience heavy rainfall till May 28.

"Due to strong southerly wind from the Bay of Bengal to the north-eastern region at the lower tropospheric levels, heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur at isolated places in parts of Assam and Meghalaya till May 28," a source in RMC said.

Quoting the India Meteorological Department (IMD), sources said that a red-colour coded weather alert has been issued for Assam and Meghalaya from May 26-28, predicting very heavy rainfall in these two north-eastern States.

"There is a strong flow of south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal, bringing a lot of moisture to Assam and Meghalaya. This is aided by the orographic factors of these two States that will bring in very heavy rainfall," the source said.

The orographic effect is a change in atmospheric conditions caused by a change in elevation, primarily due to mountains. This effect tends to leave a distinctive look to the mountains it touches.

Assam and other parts of NE have been receiving rainfalls since the last week due to impact Amphan, the super cyclone that hit the neighbouring West Bengal.
